‘The Keys Were Not Mine’ – 2026

The Story (written by me)
The keys were not mine, but I still took them. I don’t know what came over me, it’s so out of character, but there they were, sitting atop his majesty’s desk, that set of old keys that lead through those doors that very few had been permitted to enter, but many had been curious to what worlds existed beyond them… and it was as though a magnet was pulling me towards them, so I took them, placed them softly in the pocket of my dress so they wouldn’t make a sound, and walked out of the castle, across the gardens, and through the forest, towards that open field where those secret doors that I was not supposed to know about stood tall like old sentinels, patient and unmoving, as if they had been waiting far longer than I had been alive. When I reached them, the keys felt heavier than before. I realised then that the doors had never needed me. It was I who had needed them. I was ready for my escape.
